Spay and Neuter: Recovery and Clinic Information

SPAY & NEUTER INFORMATION
We recommend discussing spay/neuter timing carefully and researching all options thoroughly.
Some owners choose to wait until after one year of age to allow dogs more time to mature physically.
Low-cost clinics may be available throughout Ontario.
Always research clinics carefully and choose a veterinarian you trust.

Spay & Neuter Recovery Tips
Helping Your Puppy Heal Calmly, Comfortably & Safely
Bringing your puppy home after a spay or neuter surgery is an important recovery period. A calm environment, proper supervision, and a few simple tools can help your puppy heal comfortably while reducing stress and irritation around the incision site.
At Lakewood Ranch Doodles, we believe recovery should feel gentle, supportive, and low-stress for both puppies and families.
π©Ί The First Few Days After Surgery
Your puppy may:
Feel sleepy or quiet from anesthesia
Have a reduced appetite for 24 hours
Need extra potty breaks
Want comfort and reassurance
Try to lick or chew the incision site
Keep activity calm and controlled during healing.
Helpful Recovery Tips
β Short leash walks only
β No jumping or rough play
β Keep incision clean and dry
β Offer quiet rest areas
β Monitor for redness, swelling, or discharge
β Use calming chew options like frozen raw marrow bones (supervised)
π Alternatives to the Traditional Cone
Many puppies dislike the hard plastic βcone of shame.β
Fortunately, there are gentler recovery options that can help prevent licking while keeping your puppy more comfortable.
βοΈ Inflatable Recovery Ring (βDonut Collarβ)
An inflatable recovery ring is often much more comfortable than a traditional cone.
Benefits:
β Softer and less stressful
β Allows better vision and movement
β Easier for eating and drinking
β More comfortable for sleeping
β Helps reduce anxiety during recovery
These soft inflatable rings sit around the neck like a travel pillow and help stop your puppy from reaching the surgical area.
Important:
Some flexible or long-bodied dogs may still reach the incision area while wearing an inflatable ring. Always supervise initially to ensure it works properly for your puppy.
π Surgery Recovery Suit
A surgery suit is another excellent option for many puppies.
These soft recovery garments cover the incision area similarly to a baby onesie.
Benefits:
β Helps prevent licking and chewing
β Keeps incision protected and clean
β Comfortable for resting and sleeping
β Less bulky than a cone
β Ideal for calmer puppies
Many doodles tolerate surgery suits very well because they are soft, lightweight, and less restrictive.
Tip:
Have two suits available so one can be washed while the other is worn.
πΆ Creating a Calm Recovery Space
Your puppy heals best in a peaceful environment.
We Recommend:
Soft bedding
Calm music or quiet surroundings
Supervised chewing activities
Gentle affection and reassurance
Limiting stairs and furniture jumping
Mental calmness is just as important as physical healing.
β οΈ Call Your Veterinarian If You Notice:
Excessive swelling
Bleeding or discharge
Incision opening
Vomiting or diarrhea
Extreme lethargy
Refusing food for over 24 hours
Persistent licking despite recovery gear
πΏ Gentle Recovery Makes a Difference
A thoughtful recovery routine can help your puppy feel secure, relaxed, and comfortable while healing.
With patience, supervision, and supportive recovery tools like inflatable recovery rings and surgery suits, most puppies recover beautifully within a short period of time.
