Puppy Stages Of Development

LAKEWOOD RANCH DOODLES EDUCATION SERIES
Puppy Stages of Development
Puppies go through important learning stages where positive experiences can shape confidence, social skills, and future behaviour. Understanding these stages helps you support your puppy at the right time, in the right way.
The Four Stages of Development
1. Neonatal Period
Birth to 14 Days
Newborn puppies are completely dependent on their mother.
- Eyes and ears are closed
- Rely on touch, warmth, and scent
- Most of their time is spent sleeping and nursing
Gentle daily handling and positive stimulation support healthy development of the nervous system, confidence, and problem-solving abilities.
2. Transitional Period
15 to 21 Days
This stage begins when the eyes open and ends when puppies begin to startle at sounds.
- Puppies become more aware of their surroundings
- Their senses begin working together
- Neurological development progresses rapidly
This is a sensitive stage, so the environment should remain calm, warm, and stable.
3. Socialization Period
22 to 84 Days
This is one of the most important learning periods in a puppy's life.
Puppies begin forming relationships with:
- Other dogs
- People
- The world around them
Primary / Canine Socialization
22 to 49 Days
Puppies learn how to be dogs.
They interact with:
- Their mother
- Littermates
- Their immediate environment
During this stage they learn:
- Play skills
- Communication
- Social boundaries
- Appropriate canine behaviour
It is very important that puppies remain with their mother and littermates during this stage.
Secondary / Human Socialization
7 to 12 Weeks
Puppies begin building stronger bonds with people.
They should be gently introduced to:
- Different people
- Sounds
- Surfaces
- Routines
- Safe environments
Positive experiences help puppies grow into confident, adaptable companions.
4. Juvenile Period
12 Weeks to 6 Months
Growth begins to slow, but learning continues.
Puppies become:
- More coordinated
- More curious
- More independent
Consistent routines, gentle training, safe exposure, and calm leadership are very important during this stage.
Important Sub-Periods
Awareness Period
21 to 28 Days
Puppies become more aware of the world around them.
Because their senses are newly developing, their environment should remain calm and predictable.
Curiosity Period
5 to 7 Weeks
Puppies become curious and eager to explore.
Experiences during this time can strongly influence how they respond to people and new situations later in life.
Behaviour Refinement Period
7 to 9 Weeks
Puppies are learning quickly, and lessons during this stage can leave lasting impressions.
Gentle handling, routine, and positive training are very important.
Fear Imprint Period
8 to 10 Weeks
Puppies may be more sensitive to frightening experiences.
A scary event during this time can have a long-lasting effect, so care should be taken to keep experiences positive and calm.
Environment Awareness Period
9 to 12 Weeks
This is a good time for safe exposure to new environments.
Puppies should experience new places carefully and positively without becoming overwhelmed.
Seniority Classification Period
12 to 16 Weeks
Often called the "Age of Independence."
Puppies may begin testing boundaries as they gain confidence.
Consistency, structure, and gentle leadership are important.
Flight Instinct Period
4 to 8 Months
During this stage, puppies may become more adventurous and wander farther away than before.
Focus on:
- Reliable recall training
- Leash safety
- Consistent supervision
Second Fear Period
6 to 14 Months
A puppy who was once confident may suddenly become unsure of:
- New people
- New objects
- New situations
This is normal developmental behaviour.
Avoid forcing your puppy into scary situations. Instead, use patience, encouragement, and positive exposure.
Young Adulthood
18 to 24 Months
Dogs may test boundaries again as they mature.
Some unwanted behaviours can return if training and structure are not continued.
Calm leadership and ongoing socialization remain important.
Maturity
1 to 4 Years
Dogs continue to mature mentally and emotionally.
Continue:
- Socialization
- Training
- Positive experiences
- Mental stimulation
throughout your dog's life.
