Progression of a Puppy-Week 1

🐾 1-Week Puppy Development

At one week old, puppies are still in the neonatal stage. Their world is all about Mom, milk, warmth and sleep, but an incredible amount of development is happening behind the scenes.

🍼 Eating & Growing

Newborn puppies nurse frequently throughout the day and night. During this first week, we closely monitor their weight gain, nursing and overall condition to make sure everyone is thriving.

👀 Eyes & Ears Are Still Closed

At one week old, puppies’ eyes and ear canals remain closed. They navigate their world primarily through touch and smell, instinctively finding Mom and their littermates.

🐾 Tiny but Active

They can’t walk yet, but puppies are surprisingly active! They use a crawling or “swimming” motion to move around the whelping area and find Mom.

🌡️ Warmth Is Essential

Young puppies cannot regulate their body temperature effectively yet. They depend on Mom, their littermates and a carefully maintained environment to stay comfortably warm.

🧠 Early Neurological Development

The brain and nervous system are developing rapidly. Gentle, age-appropriate handling and early neurological stimulation can introduce tiny amounts of positive stimulation during this important developmental period.

😴 Lots of Sleep

Most of a one-week-old puppy’s day is spent nursing and sleeping. That sleep is essential for healthy growth and development.

During this delicate first week, our priority is simple: healthy growth, excellent maternal care, a clean and peaceful environment, and careful daily observation of every puppy.

They may be tiny, but the foundation for the dogs they will become is already beginning.
