Why Professional Training Matters
Bringing home a puppy is exciting, but it also comes with responsibility. Every interaction teaches your puppy something—whether you intend to teach them or not.
Many dogs are surrendered or rehomed because normal puppy behaviours such as jumping, pulling on the leash, barking, mouthing, or poor manners were never properly addressed. Fortunately, these behaviours are usually preventable with early guidance, consistency, and positive training.
Investing in a few one-on-one lessons or enrolling in a quality group training class can provide the foundation for a lifetime of success.
Why We Recommend Professional Training
Professional trainers help both puppies and their owners learn how to communicate effectively.
Training helps your puppy:
✓ Build confidence
✓ Learn household manners
✓ Develop self-control
✓ Improve focus around distractions
✓ Socialize appropriately with people and other dogs
✓ Become a safe, enjoyable member of the family
Training also teaches owners how to prevent unwanted behaviours before they become lifelong habits.
Positive Reinforcement Works Best
At Lakewood Ranch Doodles, we strongly encourage trainers who use reward-based, science-backed training methods.
Positive reinforcement rewards behaviours you want to see more often using:
• Praise
• Treats
• Toys
• Play
• Affection
These methods strengthen the relationship between dog and owner while making learning enjoyable.
Avoid trainers who rely on fear, intimidation, or physical punishment, including:
✗ Choking or leash corrections
✗ Yelling
✗ Alpha rolls
✗ Scruff shaking
✗ Harsh physical corrections
Training should build confidence—not fear.
Choosing the Right Trainer
Before enrolling, ask questions.
Look for a trainer who:
✓ Uses positive reinforcement
✓ Has experience working with puppies
✓ Provides references
✓ Continues their education
✓ Encourages owner participation
✓ Explains why training methods work
✓ Creates a fun, supportive learning environment
Remember, there is no universal licensing requirement for dog trainers. Do your research before choosing one.
Group Classes vs. Private Lessons
Both options have benefits.
Private Lessons
Ideal for:
• First-time puppy owners
• Specific behaviour concerns
• Personalized coaching
• Families wanting individual attention
Even just a few one-on-one lessons can help establish excellent habits early.
Group Classes
Group classes provide valuable real-world learning by teaching puppies to:
✓ Focus around distractions
✓ Meet other dogs appropriately
✓ Accept handling by strangers
✓ Build confidence
✓ Practice obedience in busy environments
Owners also learn by watching other teams and sharing experiences.
Whenever possible, we recommend that all family members attend training so everyone communicates with the puppy consistently.
What Makes a Good Training Class?
When observing a class, ask yourself:
✓ Are dogs and owners enjoying themselves?
✓ Is praise used frequently?
✓ Are puppies encouraged rather than corrected harshly?
✓ Is the class size small enough for individual attention?
✓ Are puppies separated from older dogs when appropriate?
✓ Are vaccinations required?
✓ Are written handouts or homework provided?
A quality class should be educational, encouraging, and enjoyable for everyone involved.
The Best Age to Start
Early socialization is one of the greatest gifts you can give your puppy.
General guidelines include:
8–16 weeks
Puppy socialization classes (when approved by your veterinarian)
4–6 months
Begin structured obedience foundations
6 months and older
Continue progressing through beginner, intermediate, and advanced training
Remember:
Older dogs can absolutely learn new behaviours. It is never too late to begin training.
Before Your First Class
To help your puppy succeed:
✓ Visit your veterinarian to ensure your puppy is healthy and current on vaccinations.
✓ Bring plenty of small, soft treats.
✓ Use the trainer's recommended leash and collar or harness.
✓ Avoid feeding a large meal immediately before class.
✓ Practice short training sessions at home every day.
Five to ten minutes of daily practice is far more effective than one long session each week.
