Progression of a Puppy-Week 2
πΎ 2-Week Puppy Development
At two weeks old, puppies are beginning an exciting transition from the newborn stage. Their world is slowly starting to open up as their senses develop and they become more aware of their surroundings.
π Eyes Are Opening
Most puppies begin opening their eyes between 10β14 days old. Their vision is still blurry and sensitive, so theyβre only beginning to see shapes, movement and light.
π Hearing Is Beginning
Their ear canals are starting to open too. Over the coming days, puppies will begin responding to sounds and voicesβa big step in their development and socialization.
πΎ Getting on Their Feet
Those tiny legs are getting stronger! Puppies are beginning to push themselves up and attempt their first wobbly steps. Crawling gradually turns into walking as their coordination improves.
π§ Rapid Brain Development
The nervous system and brain are developing quickly. Gentle handling and appropriate early experiences help introduce puppies to human touch, movement and different sensations without overwhelming them.
πΌ Mom Is Still Everything
At two weeks, puppies continue to rely almost completely on their mother for nutrition, warmth, comfort and security. Nursing and sleeping still make up most of their day.
βοΈ Growing Quickly
Healthy puppies should be steadily gaining weight. We continue monitoring each puppy closely to make sure everyone is nursing, gaining and developing appropriately.
π Early Care at Lakewood Ranch
At this age, our focus is on a calm, clean and nurturing environment, gentle individual handling and carefully age-appropriate stimulation.
These little puppies may still spend most of their time eating and sleeping, but behind the scenes, their bodies, brains and senses are changing every day.
